Overview
Harland Miller is an English artist, writer, and publisher whose work is known for its dark humour and pop-art aesthetic. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1964, he studied painting and printmaking at the Chelsea School of Art and Oxford Brookes University. Miller has exhibited worldwide, with solo exhibitions in London, Tokyo, New York, and Los Angeles. Miller's work often combines text and image in a witty and irreverent manner. His paintings often make use of vintage book cover designs, which he reimagines with humorous text or references to popular culture. Miller has also created a series of prints featuring his signature character, the "Penguin Man," a melancholic figure wearing a tuxedo with a penguin mask. In addition to his visual art, Miller has published several novels, including Slow Down Arthur, Stick to Thirty (2002), The Big Ugly Monster and the Little Stone Rabbit (2006), and When Penguins Attack (2008). His most recent novel, Last Seen Wearing (2018), is about a missing schoolgirl and the search for her. Miller has also founded and published a number of books, including the cult favourite Penguin By Design. He is also a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and in 2018 he was made an Officer of the British Empire for his contributions to the arts. Miller continues to exhibit and publish his work, and in recent years he has also branched out into new mediums, including sculpture and immersive installations. His work has been praised for its wit and intelligence, and it continues to be popular with art collectors and fans of pop culture.
